Dunedin’s well-preserved city center reflects its history as New Zealand’s first city of wealth and influence. A brief but intense period of prosperity during the 1860s Otago Gold Rush transformed this Scottish settlement into a colonial powerhouse, leaving behind a remarkable architectural legacy.

Along the walk, discover:
How Dunedin briefly served as New Zealand’s temporary capital
How the city was designed to mirror Edinburgh
The Octagon, Dunedin’s eight-sided city center, featuring the statue of Robert Burns, symbolizing Scottish heritage
The tour concludes back at the Railway Station, where the stunning booking hall features over 750,000 Royal Doulton porcelain tiles.
Explore the historic Speight’s Brewery (est. 1876), still brewing with natural spring water
Visit First Church, perched on Bell Hill, which was partially excavated for urban development
Discover the Dunedin Chinese Garden (Lan Yuan), honoring Chinese immigrants’ contributions
Learn about Garrison Hall, transformed from military drill hall to children’s film studio
See the Crown Hotel, key venue for live music and the “Dunedin Sound” of the 1980s–90s
Admire Queens Gardens, once a tidal swamp, transformed using soil from Bell Hill

"Absolutely loved the Gold Rush Grandeur: A Dunedin Heritage Walk Tour! It was a fantastic way to explore the gems of inner Otepoti as either a local or tourist. Loved the process of donning headphones and wandering the streets listening to the city's history and its stories. It really makes you focus in on the city's rich history, but also see its sites of significance from a different angle. Makes you appreciate how remarkable New Edinburgh (Dunedin) is, as you wander from site to site, taking in the amazing architecture and rich history as you go. Was very impressed by the quality of the app, and how well it worked offline once the tour was downloaded. Also loved how when you deviated off the tour path you get Sir Ian McKellan's smooth voice asking you to check your map. Would totally recommend The Southern Compass! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️" Kimberley F
