Piopiotahi – Milford Sound is one of New Zealand’s most remarkable natural landscapes, shaped by glaciers, earthquakes and water over millions of years. But reaching this remote fiord is a story in itself.
On this 120-minute driving tour, you’ll follow the Milford Road from Te Anau to Milford Sound, travelling deep into Fiordland National Park and through some of Aotearoa’s most dramatic landscapes. Along the way, you’ll learn how Māori travelled through these valleys in search of pounamu, how explorers and pioneers began opening up this remote wilderness, and how an extraordinary road was eventually carved through the mountains.
The tour begins at the Alpine Centre Café & Bar in Te Anau, the last town before the Milford Road disappears into Fiordland’s vast wilderness. From here, you’ll travel through the Eglinton Valley, past ancient beech forests and the still waters of Mirror Lakes and Lake Gunn, before climbing towards the Divide.
Continue through the remarkable Homer Tunnel, a feat of engineering built through solid rock beneath the Darran Mountains. As you emerge on the other side, the landscape changes dramatically as the road descends into the spectacular Cleddau Valley.
Along the way, you’ll meet some of the colourful characters connected with Fiordland, including Ernest Lord, the eccentric hermit of the mountains, and legendary bushman Davey Gunn. You’ll also hear about the remarkable rediscovery of the takahē and the conservation efforts protecting Fiordland’s unique wildlife.
Keep an eye out for kea, New Zealand’s inquisitive alpine parrots, and listen for stories of the forests, rivers and mountains that provide habitat for some of Aotearoa’s rarest species.
The tour finishes at the Milford Sound visitor car park, ready for you to explore Piopiotahi on foot, by boat or from the air.

brilliant. it helped me with this route which would have Been si mich harder without this tour. it also helped me a great deal to prepare for the stops which I'm usually so bad at. I wasnt afraid of getting lost bit also in an inmensive narration. I really loved it. thanks Magadalena
"A great addition to the drive into Milford Sound. We used this audio guide while driving into Milford Sound and thought it was an awesome option. We connected it to our car stereo, which meant we could both listen to the commentary easily. We downloaded it while we were on Wi-Fi, so there were no issues with connectivity along the way. The information provided was brilliant — clear, interesting and really informative. What we particularly liked was how it worked with the GPS. As you reach different points of interest, the commentary automatically starts. It doesn’t matter how many times you stop for photos, take a walk or pull over along the way — the commentary simply waits until you reach the next GPS point. By the time we arrived at Milford Sound, we both agreed it had really added to the journey and helped us appreciate what we were seeing along the way. We’d definitely recommend it and think it would elevate the Milford Sound experience for anyone driving in." Anonymous
